Movie Guide -  Brett's Picks

This page is dedicated to the art of filmmaking and includes a selection of movies and TV series that I really enjoy. In my pursuit for good art, I have undergone a development in that my taste for film has been refined somewhat. I no longer go for the flavour of the month or the hollywood mainstream films (not sure if I ever did though), where I feel that  the plot is predictable and more emphasis is put on celebreties, special effects and spectacolours than the story. Having said all this, I don't profess to the authority on the subject, I'm just stating my views and venting something which is close to my heart.
Shaolin Popeye (1994)
This movie is a rare gem! It's a story about a chinese boy who falls in love with beautiful girl, but has a hard time winning her over. This movie is hilarious with lot's of tongue in cheek humour and because it's a chinese made movie it's totally overboard. Go get it!
Knight's Tale (2001)
This is probably my most favourite movie of all time. A masterly blend of amazing brilliant writing, super directing and ingenious casting make it a pinnacle of creative genius. There is actually so much to this movie that you can actually watch it over and over again and if you buy the DVD there are a number of brilliant, but unfortunately - deleted scenes. Set in medieval times, the story is about a poor squire (William) and his friends who decide they have had enough of the low life and so set out on the path to glory and riches. William, with the help of his companions manages to enter in numerous jousting tournaments and works his way to the World Championship in London. Romance, humour, action and intellect it's all here!
Drunken Master (1978)
This movie features Jackie Chan in one of his earlier films, and one of his very best. Jackie plays the rebellious son of a Kung Fu school master, who eventually disciplines his son by sending him to the Drunken Master to be broken by his harsh training techniques. Jackie struggles against the master, but eventually gives in and goes on to learn the art of Drunken fighting. This movie earns five stars, it's so origional and really really funny. Akira Toriyama states that this movie influenced him greately in the creation of Dragonball.
Shaolin Popeye II: The Messy Temple (1994)
This is the sequel to Shaolin Popeye I, but other than having some of the same actors, it's not really related. This movie is very funny, the Kung Fu master who oversees the the two little monks is a card. The story is about a Kung Fu master and his two kid monks and the mischief they get up to at the temple. One day a suicidal girl is rescued by the trio and brought to the temple and this changes life for the monks quite dramatically. Other than the incosistancies in the story and the bit of an anti-climatic ending this movie is really entertaining.
Kiki's Delivery Service (1989)
Some really good anime! This movie has a charming story and is created by the renowned Hayao Miyazaki, who is know as a Walt Disney type figure in the Japanese culture.

Dragon Kids 2 (1995)
Don't be fooled by the cheezy title, this is not typical Kung Fu flick. In fact I have never laughed so much watching a movie .. ever! Featuring the same bald chubby kid from Shaolin Popeye 1 & 2(and a list of other movies), however in DK2 he is missing his young Kung Fu partner. What I enjoy about this movie is that it is totally unpredictable, for instance the movie is a comedy, but then at the end it gets supa serious. This was toltally out of place and dramatic - Supa!

Magnum P.I. (1982)
This series was made back in 1980, and that's what's it so good. Origional, funny and realaxing are the best words to describe Magnum PI. For those of you who don't know the plot, it's about a young Nam vet, Thomas Magnum (Tom Selleck), who is now earning a living as a PI. Magnum lives on his friend, Robin Masters', a famous authors  estate. For those of you who have had a hard time financially the fact that Magnum bum's off Mr.Masters house and car (a Ferrari 308GTS to be precise) might sooth your guilt trip a bit. The only drawback Magnum seems to have is Higgin's (and his two dogs -Apollo and Zues), the caretaker of Robin's estate. The unique blend of personalities in the series make it great fun! It's also got a supa 80's vibe.

The Wodehouse Playhouse (1975)
Get ready for some quality comedy. John Alderton (Please Sir) and Pauline Collins play in this extreemely funny series that is based on the books of PG Wodehouse. I dont know what else to say, only if you get a chance -WATCH IT!

Jeeves and Wooster
"Uhh .. Jeeves could you mix me a strengthening cocktail". "Very good Sir". If you haven't read or heard about Jeeves and Wooster, then you don't know what your missing. Brilliant acting, realistic settings and lots of laughs make it a really good series, although it might not everbodys cup of tea. Set in the 1920's Worster, a young aristocrat lives in London with his Valet, Jevees.

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes
"But Holmes it's so simple". Yes Watson of course it's simple after Holmes has explained it to you. It's these nuances that make The Adventures of  Sherlock Holmes along with Holmes' idiosyncrasies a joy to watch. True to the books these DVD's contain the first portions short stories by Conan Doyle and end off at Holmes' death. But dont worry theres another series, also featuring Jeremy Brett (Holmes) picking up where these leave off.
